How Trees Hate You handles comments, ratings, analytics, anti-spam checks, and third-party embeds.

Last updated: 2026-04-25

Trees Hate You(“we”, “us”) operates as an unofficial fan site. This policy explains what we collect when you read the site, what gets stored when you post a comment or rating, and which third parties are involved.

What we collect directly

Reading the site does not require an account, and we do not ask for your name, email, or location. The only data we keep ourselves comes from comment posting and ratings, described below.

Comments and ratings

When you post a comment or submit a star rating, we store the following on our backend (Cloudflare Durable Object storage):

  • The comment text and the display name you chose.
  • A timestamp.
  • A one-way HMAC hash of your IP address, not the raw IP. The hash is used for rate limits, duplicate rating protection, and duplicate vote/report protection.
  • The page identifier the comment was posted under.

Comments are public and visible to every visitor of the page. We do not delete them on a schedule.

Comment removal and data requests: if you want your own comment removed, or if you want to know or delete what data we hold for your HMAC bucket, email privacy@trees-hate-you.app with the comment URL or rough timestamp. Copyright takedown requests go to the DMCA page instead.

Anti-spam services

To keep the comments section usable, Cloudflare Turnstile runs at submit time. It produces a token proving you are not a bot; Cloudflare may collect basic browser signals to make that decision.

Third-party services

  • Google Analytics 4: anonymized pageview, referrer, and device data.
  • Microsoft Clarity: anonymized session replay and heatmap data.
  • Cloudflare: hosting, CDN, DDoS protection, and request routing.
  • itch.io iframe: the embedded game loads from itch.io and follows their privacy policy.

Cookies and local storage

We do not set first-party tracking cookies. Third-party services may set their own cookies; you can disable them in your browser. Theme preference is stored in your browser's local storage and never leaves your device.

GDPR / CCPA

EU and California residents have rights including access, correction, and deletion of personal data. For data we hold (comment text, display name, hashed IP), email privacy@trees-hate-you.app and we will process the request manually.

Children

The site is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from them. If you believe a child posted a comment, contact us and we will remove it.
